Saline Breast Implants or Silicone Breast Implants ?

There are basically  two types of breast implants approved by the FDA - silicone-filled breast implants and saline-filled breast implants.

Breast implants currently come in a number of shapes and sizes- with two types of  outer coatings or shells.

A new type of silicone-filled breast  implant with a thicker filling, called a form-stable highly cohesive breast implant, or "gummy bear breast implant "- is currently being tested by the FDA for approval for future use in breast implant procedures.

Both saline-filled breast implants and silicone-filled breast implants have an outer wall that is composed of silicone elastomer. This outer wall of the breast implant, is basically a cocoon that contains the actual breast implant filling as well as the shape of the actual breast implant.

A number of breast implant  types are classified as "double lumen." The term "double lumen"basically means that the breast implant filling is actually contained within two outer walls of elastomer. This type of breast implant creates an additional layer of protection against the breast implant from rupturing and leaking the breast implant filling into a breast implant patients body.

Breast Implant Pros and Cons

In general, silicone-gel-filled breast implants are smoother, softer and feel more like natural breast tissue .Silicone breast implants feel like a semi-solid gel, while saline breast implants are often compared to water balloons. Silicone-gel breast implants are also less likely to wrinkle and ripple than saline breast implants. Wrinkling is actually considered one of the major disadvantages of saline breast implants.

Breast Implant Maintenance

If a saline breast implant ruptures it typically deflates within four hours. If a  silicone breast implant ruptures, on the other hand, can be silent. As a result, a MRI exam of your breasts and breast implants are needed three years after the initial breast implant surgery, then every two years for follow up.
