After Mastectomy Surgery

The breast reconstruction surgery can be done after the mastectomy while you are still under anesthesia or at a later time. Many patients wait because they are not ready yet to undergo other operation or because of the need to have performed chemotherapy following the breast cancer. More than one procedure is usually required for complete reconstruction and patients must be informed before the surgery what awaits them. There are many options regarding breast reconstruction surgery including:

  • 1. Implants that use a special tissue expander to stretch the skin then insert an artificial implant. The tissue expander can be filled thus reaching an optimal volume by injecting saline once in a week for a few times. The sessions can be quite painful but many of them are pleased with the results and the fact that they can control the shape and look of the breast. In 1992, implant surgeries where banned except those that participated in approved clinical studies. In 2003, and FDA panel that reviewed 10 years of data recommended the ban be lifted if the women were informed about the surgeries and it s consequences. The FDA has not yet been lifted to this date.
  • 2. This involves taking a women s own tissue from the abdomen or back to create a breast mound and reconstruct the breast. This procedure is also called TRAM flap, which is the abbreviation of transverse rectus abdominis muscle. This surgery requires experienced plastic surgeons.
  • 3. The areola can be tattooed and a nipple can also be constructed from tissue that is taken from the back or abdominal flap and tattooed to resemble the color of a nipple. There are some cases in which the original nipple can be reattached but only if the surgeon is sure the tissue has no cancer. The nipple will not react to the differences to touch or temperature.
  • 4. There may be complication if one uses chemotherapy and many prefer to delay the reconstruction as it can cause bleeding, scarring and infection. Wearing breast prosthesis can also be possible for women who choose not to have mastectomy or wide local excision. The artificial breast is usually made from silicone gel and it is inserted into the bra cup. At first, the sensation may be uncomfortable but this feeling goes away after a few times.
