Los Angeles Lumpectomy Surgery Or Partial Mastectomy Surgery Los Angeles

When the surgeon determines that the breast tumor must be removed, one of the most important choices the patient must make is how much breast tissue to remove. Sometimes, it is better to remove the entire breast, which is known as mastectomy.

Patients that are in an early-stage and tumors have not yet spread can chose breast-conserving surgery. Research also shows that for stage I and II tumors, the long-term outcome from lumpectomy plus radiation or from mastectomy is the same, so doctors are likely to say the choice is yours.

In general, there are only two options: lumpectomy or partial mastectomy. In lumpectomy, the surgeon removes only the breast tumor and a small margin of surrounding tissue. The objective is to cut the tumor from the rest of the breasts, and it is very important that the biopsied tissues show no cancer calls remaining. This operation must be followed by five or six weeks of chemotherapy to catch any stray cancer cells. Radiation therapy is also recommended following surgery, this is also called adjuvant chemotherapy. Because of good results from studies and research, oncologists and surgeons are increasingly likely to recommend neo-adjuvant chemo, which basically means that radiation therapy is used for making the tumor small, before extirpating it. Lumpectomy and partial mastectomy has many dangers and risks, side effects and difficult recovery problems:

  • Pain medication. The patient must take good supplies of pain meds. You must ask the medic what kind of problems and pain are to be expected. After the surgery the patient may feel tired, fatigued and uncomfortable
  • Surgical dressing and drains. The dressing that is applied over the wound must be changed from time to time as there may be a drain in the breast area that could require special treatment. Other dangers include redness ,swelling and fever.
  • Physical exercises are very important to prevent stiffness in the arm and shoulder where the tumor was removed. The patient must receive instructions about the exercises as it can help make recovery faster.
